The Plate of Black America - feat. Dr. Baruch of the Michael Baisden Show

Numbness in the arm. Shortness of breath. Sudden stabbing pain in the chest. All symptoms of a heart attack. Though commonly attributed to congestive heart failure and noted as the leading cause of death of African Americans by the Center for Disease Control; research shows that for some African Americans, the killer got in through the kitchen.

The American Medical Association reports a diet low in total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol and rich in fruits and vegetables effectively lowers blood pressure; however traditional African American diets are quite the contrary. Notoriously known for high concentrated animal fat content, white sugar and sodium; “soul food” may possibly be the perpetrator and/or at minimal the accomplice in the deaths of over 200,000 blacks in 2006 alone.

"We have to put a stop to this epidemic," says Angela Patton, "we have to educate our community on how important diet and proper nutrition is to optimum wellness." Patton is director of Camp Diva a local rites of passage project for urban teenage girls & the co-founder of the Richmond Noir Market, a weekly initiative developed to promote health and wellness in the African American community. “The Richmond Noir Market is our effort to put a dent in the health disparities in the African American community.” The Richmond Noir Market will feature weekly workshops, exhibitors & keynote speakers revolving around topics of health and wellness and also featuring healthy vegetarian cooking demonstrations.

To commemorate the launch of the Richmond Noir Market, Patton and co-founder Duron Chavis have invited Dr. Baruch Ben Yehudah; founder of Everlasting Life and frequent health expert on the Michael Baisden Show to be the keynote speaker at the inaugural event. Baruch lectures nationally and abroad on the topic of achieving optimal health as an outgrowth of healthy lifestyle changes. He also speaks on the empirical evidence correlating proper nutrition with improved academic performance, behavioral balance, relationship success, etc. The topic of discussion for Saturday, May 15th is The Plate of Black America – The Secret Relationship between Food & Disease Terrorizing African American Wellness.

The Richmond Noir Market launches Saturday, May 15, 2010. The Plate of Black America will start at 4:30pm. The event is free to the public. The market opens at 12 noon and closes at 6:30 every Saturday at 2022 Sledd Street Richmond VA 23220 off Chamberlayne Ave beside the Military Retirees Club.
