One Injured In George Wythe HS Fire

George Wythe High School in Richmond was briefly evacuated Monday afternoon after a fire inside a school restroom.

According to Richmond fire officials, a security officer discovered the fire in a trash can inside a girls' restroom around 1 p.m. The officer took the trash can outside. Richmond Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Shawn L. Jones said the officer suffered smoke inhalation.

A student was taken to the hospital around the same time for a medical condition unrelated to the fire.

Students were allowed back inside a short time after being evacuated.

Jones did not say what may have started the fire.
